Mark's Midweek Magnet - Week 5

Hi,

This week the fridge magnet is courtesy of Yvette's brother Ralph from a few years ago. Her two brothers have helped our collection with a few magnets over the years. We would rather have a fridge magnet than a cheesy t-shirt anyway. This magnet is for once not flat plastic, but a 3d ceramic stylish effort. (woooo)



Both of us have never been to the South of France, so we will be relying on other people's reviews and perceptions of the area. What we do know is that Cannes is most famous for it's film festival, held on 14th - 25th May in 2014. The prestigious Palme d'Or is awarded to the best film in the festival.

If you are fed up with the hassle of security at airports when flying, then you maybe would consider travelling to the South of France from South East England by train instead. The more popular activities and sightseeing in Cannes are based, unsurprisingly around it's Mediterranean seafront.

We would stay somewhere cheaper like Nice, or at a push Marseille if no rooms available in Nice. The excellent French TGV railway line stretches across the Cote D'Azur and allows you to pick a cheaper destination to sleep in and just day trip to the dearer places. The exception, if you like to see 'celebrities' or beautiful people watch is St. Tropez. The rich elite won't allow a 'common' train in to their Cote d'Azure playground, but are gracious enough to allow some bus services from other parts of the South of France.

The beach looks inviting, but you will have to pay to use it. Most of the Promenade de la Croisette beachfront is hotel owned and a hefty charge will be made to use the private beaches as non guest.

As previously stated, we avoid beach holidays or short breaks if we can help it. Cannes is too expensive for us to consider as a base for sightseeing along the Cote d'Azur; so the sad reality for us is that the only view we will probably ever get of Cannes is the fridge magnet. Apart from looking for photographs for use in this blog post, of course. There is always the possibility of visiting Monaco and crossing it off the new Countries list, and maybe visiting the Cote d'Azur as well. After all, you never know what the future holds in store.
